Cabell Outreach
At Chapel Hill we have a special connection
to Cabell Elementary School (just across Myra from the
church) because that is were it all began. We started
meeting in the Gym at Cabell in 1959 and stayed there for
two years. We work closely with the
staff to help meet the needs of the special students there.
Some of the ways we help:
- We start the school year by sending
some of the backpacks and school supplies from Backpack
Sunday.
- When the second semester begins we
have sent over snacks and hot beverage drink mixes
(cocoa, tea, cider) for the teachers.
- During Teacher Appreciation Week in
the Spring we always do a salad luncheon for the
teachers.
- We offer Tutoring and TAKS
preparation during our WOW (Wonderful on Wednesday).
- And of course, our biggie is the
Summer Sacks.
- We actually start in January, going
to Half Price Books to gather books for the kids.
We collect over 600 books, sort them by reading level
and each student at Cabell gets one in their Summer Sack
on the last day of school. The sack also includes
some info about the church, VBS and WOW, as well as some
fun goodies (like pencils, erasers, stickers) and
activity pages to keep them busy. We have also
stuffed in a brochure from the rec center with info on
Summer activities.
